Before students can take upper-level courses in their engineering or computer science major, they must formally be admitted into the College of Engineering and Information Technology. To be admitted, students must satisfy the gateway requirements, which vary by major. For details about transferring to engineering or computer science programs at UMBC, please view the Transfer Information page. Course descriptions may be found in the UMBC Undergraduate Catalog.

CHEMICAL ENGINEERING GATEWAY REQUIREMENTS [top]
Students must complete MATH 151, ENES 101, CHEM 101, and ENGL 100 or ENGL 110. These courses must be completed with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5. Required courses for an engineering major must be completed with a grade of "C" or higher. Students must select a track to complete—Traditional or Biotechnology/Bioengineering.

Transfer Students: In addition to the four courses listed above, please note that the grades for all math, chemistry, physics, and engineering courses will be included in the gateway GPA calculation.

Repeat policy
At UMBC, Students may not register for a course more than two times. They are considered registered for a course if they are enrolled after the end of the schedule adjustment period. A course in which the student receives a grade of "W" (Withdraw) is counted as an attempt. Students may petition the Office of Undergraduate Education for a third and final attempt of a course taken at UMBC or another institution.

COMPUTER SCIENCE GATEWAY REQUIREMENTS [top]
Students must complete CMSC 201 and CMSC 202 (minimum grade of "B" required) and CMSC 203 (minimum grade of "C" required). A grade of “C” or better is necessary for any course to be applied to the computer science major. Transfer students majoring in computer science must complete at least 18 credits in CMSC, CMPE, or ENEE courses at UMBC.

MECHANICAL ENGINEERING GATEWAY REQUIREMENTS [top]
EFFECTIVE FALL 2009, PLEASE NOTE
Students that began their higher education Fall 2009 and after and have maintained continuous enrollment without a two-year break must complete MATH 152, ENES101, and ENME 110, with a grade of “B” or better, and CHEM 101, with a grade of “C” or better. Students who do not meet the grade requirement will be permitted a single repeat of two of the gateway courses to earn the required grade. Enrolling in a gateway course at UMBC or a Mechanical Engineering Department pre-approved equivalent course at another institution is considered an attempt. Students are not allowed to take any 300-level or 400-level mechanical engineering courses until the gateway requirement is fulfilled.

Students admitted before Fall 2009 and transfer students that began their higher education prior to Fall 2009 must complete the following requirements. Students must complete MATH 151, ENES 101, CHEM 101, and ENGL 100 or ENGL 110. These courses must be completed with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 and all courses listed as required for an engineering major must be completed with a grade of "C" or higher.

Transfer Students: In addition to the four courses listed above, please note that the grades for all math, chemistry, physics, and engineering courses will be included in the gateway GPA calculation.

To earn a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from UMBC, a minimum of 24 credits in ENME courses must be completed, each with a minimum grade of "C" or better.
