UMBC's Department of Chemical, Biochemical & Environmental Engineering offers undergraduate and graduate programs leading to B.S. in chemical engineering, the M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in chemical and biochemical engineering, and in civil engineering. The Civil Engineering program (M.S. and Ph.D.) is focused exclusively in environmental engineering and water resources.

Research is focused in biochemical, biomedical and bioprocess engineering and covers a wide range of areas including systems biology and functional genomics, biomaterials engineering, bioprocess engineering, cellular engineering, engineering education and outreach, environmental engineering, sensor technology, water resources, and others.
